Contentment and Gratitude — Topical Study for Women

A four-week study on learning to be content

A four-week study on the kind of contentment Paul said he had to learn — not resignation, not pretending things are fine, but a settled gratitude that holds whether there is plenty or little, and what Scripture says it grows from.

Four sessions, with a suggested 60-minute group meeting in the leader guide. Preparation and any work between meetings are extra; no fixed homework time is promised. Choose Plain or Styled, in A4 or US Letter. You only need one version of each guide.

What your first meeting could look like

Before meeting, the leader reads Philippians 4:10–20 and 1 Timothy 6:6–10, 17–19, participant pages 4–8 and leader pages 2–5. Participants use the workbook; the separate leader guide helps the facilitator prepare. This outline follows the supplied 60-minute rhythm.

  1. Welcome and read — 15 minutes. Remind everyone they can pass, then read Philippians 4:10–20 and 1 Timothy 6:6–10, 17–19 aloud and in context.
  2. Notice and explore — 18 minutes. Notice Paul’s changing circumstances, the gift he receives and the calls to generosity. Use the teaching focus and cross-references on leader page 5.
  3. Discuss — 15 minutes. Choose two of the supplied questions. For example: What conditions did Paul learn contentment within? Why does he still celebrate the gift?
  4. Write, respond and close — 12 minutes. The supplied practice is to make one clear request or accept offered support. Decide together how to use the private writing time; no one needs to share a personal need aloud. Close with prayer and any appropriate follow-up.

Adapted from leader pages 4–5 and participant pages 4–8. This is an example of using the included material, not an extra course or a promise that every group will finish in an hour.

How to use it

Contentment is not something Paul was born with — he said plainly that he learned it. This four-week study traces what Scripture teaches about a heart at rest: the discontent that comparison breeds, the gratitude that reorders what we see, the difference between godly contentment and quiet despair, and the trust it ultimately rests on. Drawing on Philippians 4, parts of Ecclesiastes, the Psalms and the Gospels, each session pairs group discussion with reflection prompts for the week. Suitable for personal study or a small group. Choose one participant PDF for your paper size and preferred style. Leaders also use the matching leader guide. Start with participant pages 2–3, then Session 1 on pages 4–8; the leader’s Session 1 plan is on page 5. The ZIP includes a start-here file with a four-session page map. These are print-and-write PDFs, without interactive typing fields. Styled covers feature a light cup-and-flowers illustration; Plain White files are also included. Prepare the weekly passages before your meeting and use the writing spaces at your own pace. Finish in four meetings using participant page 24 during Session 4’s writing and prayer time; the extra closing meeting is optional.
